2010: A Year In Review

I have to say that I am more than happy to say  that 2010 is almost one for the history books. It was a trying year but I survived and learned a lot. In fact, I can say my life turned a corner for the positive and that I am going to enter 2011 with renewed energy, optimism, and vigor.

My Favorite iPhone Apps for 2010

Just because I got an iPad in 2010 doesn’t mean I’ve lost any love for my iPhone. In fact, I recently upgraded to the iPhone 4. Today’s smart phone apps are something I could only dream about when I got my first PDA in hopes to better organize myself and my schedule.

My phone is always on me so it is my primary organization tool especially now I am having to track a lot more things since my surgery.

My Favorite Cloud Based Apps for 2010

While I haven’t moved myself and my work entirely to the cloud, there are some cloud based applications that play integral roles in my writing, communications, and workflow. In 2011, one of my professional goals is to do more work in the cloud than I have in previous years.

As 2010 comes to a close, I have a couple of projects cooking so I can end out 2010 and start 2011 on a high note.

  • Moving my blog from its long time home on TypePad to WordPress and its own domain.
  • Working on be as well informed as I can about all matters thyroid after my surgery in October.
  • Working hard on getting my groove back .

My hope 2011 is going to be a better year than 2010 both personally and professionally.

My First Impressions of Google Books

One of my resolutions for 2011 is to purchase no print books unless necessary (for a project or other priority and an electronic version of the book doesn’t yet exist). This means I am going to be doing my reading on either my iPad or Kindle. Now, Google Books is entering the eBooks mix with clients for Android, PC, Mac, and the iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch. I checked out the Google Books app on my iPad and it left me wondering why Google took this step except as a disruptive move over a market segment.

My Favorite iPad Apps for 2010

2010 has definitely been the year of the iPad and its application ecosystem is flourishing. My iPad is seeing a lot of use and I have my list of go to applications I use during the course of the workday and on my freelance projects.

My iPad comes with me to work where I use it for managing my project tasks and calendar, to the doctor’s office to manage my medical history, and even manage my Apple TV with it.

Ditching my Landline?

I can’t remember the last time I picked up my home phone to take a call. It’s been at least 7-8 years of rarely using this POTS line.  However, for some reason, I still maintain the number because it is all on my bills and other important things. So for the past couple of years, I’ve been paying for very expensive voice mail that I don’t even use.  Again, I am arriving at the time of year when I look to economize on bills and my landline has been on my list year after year and I am rethinking my options to save some money.

My friends and family all know to call me on my cell phone to reach me. I use my cell phone or Google Voice number on my resume and online postings so my list of justifications for the landline are pretty sparse.

iCyte Going To A Subscription Model

iCyte – an online research capture tool – I wrote about for WebWorkerDaily is making the move to go fee-based (eschewing the freemium model) on January 1, 2011. I consider it a noteworthy tool and great for capturing and organizing online research. In fact, it is on the short list of tools I  mention when folks ask me about raising their online research game. Although my online research workflow is pretty well established and iCyte never made my line up though I still use it on occasion but I doubt I will sign up for a subscription.
