Yammer, the enterprise social network and recent Microsoft acquisition, is actually quite iPhone friendly. The Yammer iOS app lets iPhone users get access to their organization’s enterprise social network, so they can monitor their feed plus send and receive messages from other network members.

One of Yammer’s goals is to replace the email inbox, and the Yammer iOS app helps extend this new breed of social enterprise to mobile users.

Now that the launch of SharePoint My Sites and other social tools is complete and user training has occurred, the Productivity Phase is where user engagement and self-sufficiency begins. The value of social tools really takes off during this phase as the business processes and communications take flight on their new channels.

Book Review: iPad: The Missing Manual

Some can say that the iPad transcends the need for a user manual. While I want to agree, iPad: The Missing Manual is a great book for iPad users looking for an overall reference or those that want to fill in some of their knowledge gaps and learn something new that they may have missed in their tinkering with the tablet.

The book is a good soup to nuts introduction to the iPad with the first three chapters covering the basics of iPad setup, a tour of the iPad’s major parts, and the basics of interacting with the iPad. Chapter 3 is a must read for new iPad users who may not be familiar with finger moves and gestures. More experienced iPad users should get something out the chapter’s coverage of using voice and using keyboards for interaction and inputting information.

The recently released OmniPlan has professional-level features that set a new bar for iPad project management apps. This is the culmination of the Omni Group to port all their popular Mac productivity applications to the iPad, which makes it well worth the $49.99 (USD) price tag. When I previously wrote about tablet apps for project management, OmniPlan had yet to launch. After checking out this app, I’m here to say that no coverage of iPad project management apps is complete without it.

iPad users don’t need to be denied SharePoint access as iPad apps like Coaxion, harmon.ie: Sharepoint Mobile Client, Colligo Briefcase Pro, and others are becoming available in the App Store. However, while these apps add a lot to user experience and productivity, they are but one element in a comprehensive iPad to SharePoint security strategy.

While the latest iPad is certainly getting corporate attention, Jeff Webb, head of consulting for SharePointXperts, told me a story about riding the DC metro train and watching a (three letter acronym) manager reading email on an iPad. The retina display meant that Jeff could read his access code and email from a few feet away.

SharePoint 2010 & Visio Services: A New Tool For Technical Writers?

Publishing Visio drawings (*.vdw files) to SharePoint 2010 using Visio Services is one of the best things to come out of SharePoint 2010. I’ve dealt with large scale Visio drawing libraries on past contracts and know firsthand how cumbersome it can be to share Visio drawings with other people who don’t have access to Visio on their PC. Besides, Visio Services are another tool to democratize project management data because accessing Visio drawings via Web browser is a much friendlier than through Adobe Acrobat much less the Visio application itself.

Visio Services can also refresh the data and recalculate the visuals of a Visio drawings hosted on a Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 site refresh connections to various data sources and to update affected data graphics and text fields.
