Collaboration: It’s about the corporate culture!

Technology pundits, consultants, and academics often see the latest online technologies, Generation Y, Work/Life Balance are the drivers for online collaboration but it takes more just one of those elements or fads to drive collaboration.  It really is about the total culture of so I’ve found during my time as a contract technical writer.

Corporate culture has to promote online collaboration in order for it to be successful. It gives employees the space and tools for success to collaborate with their coworkers, contractors, and external customers.

Some integral elements of a collaborative corporate culture include:

Book Review: SharePoint 2010 at Work by Mark Miller

SharePoint at Work Book CoverMy luck with picking SharePoint 2010 books is continuing because I just read SharePoint 2010 at Work by Mark Miller who assembles a veritable “Best Of” EndUserSharePoint.com writing. This book is a keeper! The book chockfull of practical SharePoint knowledge in multiple facets of designing, developing, and deploying SharePoint 2010 inside the corporate enterprise. The book is actually a compilation of articles written by SharePoint 2010 practitioners who work in the industry.

The  SharePoint Maturity Model that leads off the book  should be required reading for anybody deploying Microsoft SharePoint 2010 today. As I’ve often said, it’s not that SharePoint is bad, it’s the implementation. The SharePoint Maturity Model (by Sadalit Van Buren) homes in on one of the biggest issues I’ve encountered with SharePoint through multiple contracts as a technical writer and that is that too many times when it comes to SharePoint that organizations don’t really know what they have and focus on projects that may not bring a suitable Return on Investment. Organizations need to have a cohesive way to analyze and understand the SharePoint platform as a whole that makes this article required reading in my opinion.

Book Review: Security and Privacy for Microsoft Office 2010 Users by Mitch Tulloch

Security and Privacy for Microsoft Office 2010 Users by Mitch Tulloch is a book I’ve been trying to find for years. Throughout my time as a technical writer, I’ve bumped into some minor to major security and privacy issues related to the development and distribution of Microsoft Office documents including some that caused a measure of embarrassment to people. By extension of my work as a technical writer, I’ve had to give both formal and one-on-one training about some of the topics in this book and can tell you it is easy to say it’s just Microsoft Office until something you don’t want to leak out gets out in one of your documents. read more »

Book Review: MOS 2010 Study Guide for Microsoft Office SharePoint

Part of my 2012 learning plan is to build up my SharePoint 2010 skills. It’s a popular platform in my local employment marketplace. I’ve worked with it a lot in the past with a lot of OJT learning. Besides, I am a believer in SharePoint and hope to see it play a part of my near to mid-term professional future. I purchased the MOS 2010 Study Guide for Microsoft Office SharePoint by Geoff Evelyn from iTunes Bookstore to get the SharePoint fun started.

Using Office 365, I went to work through the exercises in the book using SharePoint Online to help sharpen my skills and learn some features like tuning the site search. While I know this book is written as a study guide for the SharePoint MOS, I am disappointed to see only a bare minimum of coverage on planning a SharePoint site. In my travels, I’ve seen multiple SharePoint implementations suffer from lack of planning and the planning issues drifted across all levels of the project including the stakeholders who were to manage the sites.

Microsoft Office 365 for Project Managers

The  launch of Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft’s new collaboration tool suite that includes SharePoint Online, Exchange Online, Lync Online, Office 2010 Web Apps, and Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus brought a lot of headlines because anything cloud is hot right now. Nevertheless, project management features were absent from the marketing push unless you knew where to look.

iCloud: My Thoughts And Reactions

Now that my iPad and iPhone have been running iOS 5 for about a week now, I am finally turning my attention to iCloud, Apple’s heir apparent to MobileMe and their first real contender into the cloud services market. Despite Apple’s reputation for perfection and iteration, the cloud has consistently eluded them for years.

I want to see Apple do well in the cloud this time. Their previous missteps are not befitting a company of their caliber.

Writing And Reviewing Documents Remotely

I’ve worked on a number of remote technical writing, reviewing, and editing projects throughout my career both full time and part time. Over time, I like to think I’ve learned a lot from these projects and put the effort to refine my workflow and approach based on what I learned on the previous project.

With some clear expectations and a little planning upfront, a remote writer or editor can be just as productive as one that is working onsite with the rest of the team. A  little bit of upfront work means that remote writing and reviewing projects won’t be left out of sight and out of mind.
