The recent launch of Microsoft Project 2010 promises an improved user experience and new scheduling, reporting and management features, as well as a number of enhancements to existing features. But what’s all this really mean you’re when considering upgrading the most ubiquitous, and yet vastly underutilized, desktop application in project management. The fact is, many project managers and teams have a divisive relationship with Microsoft Project and rarely exercise its features beyond the rudimentary basics needed to get a project schedule published.
The recently launched Google Apps Marketplace features more than 20 (and counting) project management applications that augment Google Apps or Google Apps Premier Edition in support of team collaboration, planning, scheduling and reporting. Integration doesn’t require much technical experience, and some of them are even available for free.
I bide my working days (and nights) between a client site and my home office, so the concept of mobility and project management has been on my mind, even more so after I bought my iPhone 3GS. Already, cloud-based project management applications such as LiquidPlanner and Mac project management applications Merlin 2 and SharedPlan Pro, among others, are extending their applications to the iPhone. There is also a class of iPhone project management applications — while a minority in the App Store — offering a surprising range of features and flexibility.
I’ve recently been thinking about how Google Voice, Google Wave and Google Buzz joining the full Google Apps lineup would make it a budget-friendly teleworking platform. Organizations can now literally purchase themselves a “telework in a box” solution — a complete office productivity software, communications and collaboration package — with little or no requirement for support from their own technical staff.
Nozbe, the online Getting Things Done (GTD)-based project management tool, announced integration with Evernote last week. This is yet another worthy third-party integration where a service benefits from the power and flexibility Evernote offers. If you haven’t used Evernote yet, I recommend you try it out because it is one of the best note-taking applications on the market.
I recently wrote about TaskPaper coming to the iPhone and my appreciation of simple and easy to use task lists. Another option for people who just need a simple, easy-to-use to-do list is YouDo, an iPhone and iPod touch app.
