The Mobility Hub – Will Kelly – Choose DaaS for BYOD

Living near Washington, DC, I get exposure to BYOD thinking from both the federal government and the commercial sector, making me more partial to flexible yet secure BYOD solutions. Lately, I’ve become partial to desktop-as-a-service.

DaaS works well for BYOD, telework programs, and even continuity of operations. It exists at the intersection of cloud hosting and mobile devices and provides a secure, remotely hosted Windows desktop for applications and data that is accessible from tablets, smartphones, notebooks, and even older PCs.

How to use Yammer on your iPhone | TechRepublic

Takeaway: Yammer, the enterprise social network, has a capable iPhone app that can help mobile users stay in touch with their coworkers. Will Kelly demonstrates the basics of the Yammer iOS app.

Yammer, the enterprise social network and recent Microsoft acquisition, is actually quite iPhone friendly. The Yammer iOS app lets iPhone users get access to their organization’s enterprise social network, so they can monitor their feed plus send and receive messages from other network members.

One of Yammer’s goals is to replace the email inbox, and the Yammer iOS app helps extend this new breed of social enterprise to mobile users.

Three free apps for securely signing documents with your iPhone | TechRepublic

With today’s mobile and geographically dispersed teams, subscription-based eSignature platforms like Adobe EchoSign and DocuSign are more secure and sane options for sending documents for signoff than emailing PDF documents, having the recipient print them out, sign them in ink, scan the document to PDF again, and then send them back to the sender. Take one of these eSignature platforms a step further and integrate it into a CRM or document workflow, and documents can be sent securely to multiple mobile users who can sign off the documents from their iPhone.

Connect your iPhone to Microsoft Office 365 | TechRepublic

I wrote this post for the Smartphones Blog on TechRepublic.com:

Microsoft Office 365, a cloud-based collaboration platform, is starting to get a lot of attention from Small to Medium Businesses (SMBs) and enterprises wanting to outsource their Microsoft SharePoint, Exchange email, and Unified Communications (UC). While some critics cite Office 365 as not being “mobile enough,” the iPhone setup is quite friendly and certainly a time-saver for organizations that are used to managing more complicated smartphone/email server setups in house.

Rethinking My Task List Management

Back in the Stone Age, I made the move from a dead tree organizer to a PDA because of the promise of being able to manage my task lists electronically. Like other parts of my life, I became better organized electronically than I ever was on paper. The same holds true today but I am trying to capture and track a lot more task items than back in the day leading me into a completely new set of issues.

Perhaps my biggest task management sin is creating the never-ending task list. You know, the one that is impossible to complete bringing about many overdue tasks often times fading away into the ether of iOS. I’ve been using OmniFocus (definitely not to its fullest extent) to manage my tasks because I can synchronize it between my MacBook Pro, iPad, and iPhone. On the side, I’ve also been flirting with Things for task management because I especially like how it handles tagging and project organization. However, its lack of true synchronization between devices is at best an inconvenience for a real showstopper and at times me. I also like how Things includes a Someday list where OmniFocus only has an Inbox.

Is it Time to Retire my RSS Readers?

I’ve been a long time consumer of RSS feeds – they’ve been an integral part of how I keep up on technology industry news – but now I am wondering if it is time to retire my RSS as a research tool. I use Google Reader as my primary reader with most of my consumption using Byline on my iPhone and  Reeder on my iPad. Hitting up my RSS feeds while still a daily habit seems to be a habit of last resort.

Though in revisiting how I gather my news and research online, my onetime reliance on RSS is now supplanted by Twitter and mobile apps like Washington Post for iPad and CNN on my iPhone and iPad. I suppose it is my frustration about fat fingering on Byline that finally pushed me over the edge.

Are you still using RSS to get your news?

Why I am not getting a Verizon iPhone

I’ve been watching the news about the impending launch of the Verizon iPhone even though it is not really news for me as an iPhone user because I won’t be making the switch. My telecommunications patronage has been about who the lesser evil is since my mobile phone provider, cable provider, and Telephone Company have all had issues of one sort or another while I’ve been their customer.

Verizon Wireless is supposed to be separate company from Verizon. This is all fine and good. I understand. However, the billing problems and line problems I have had from Verizon over the years while I’ve been in my house make it hard to switch to any Verizon company for my preferred telecommunications provider. Verizon Wireless product offerings like the iPhone and Verizon FIOS are very attractive to me on paper but then I remember the technical issues I had with the POTS line in my house. How can I trust them with more advanced technology offerings?

The Democratization of Project Management Data

33012_9986 Early in my technical writing and consulting career, project
management data was too often locked in Gantt  charts – often deemed way too hard to understand by folks outside of the project management office (PMO) – but now today’s tight economic times and limited development resources require project management data like scheduling, risks, and related information to be accessible to a wider audience who may or may not be PMP certified.

Some recent writing for WebWorkerDaily and on a client project got me thinking about the importance that multiple levels of an organization need to be able to access and respond to project management data.
