Managing Offsite Technical Writing Projects With Do.com

I previously wrote about Do.com, gave it high marks, and then got to thinking about how it could work for managing offsite technical writing projects. I’ve had mixed experiences myself with offsite technical writing projects and while I still think some organizations are more equipped to deal with remote workers than others. However, I haven’t given up the hope that putting a management tool layer between the remote writer and those involved in the project at the mother ship couldn’t help improve communications and create an audit trail.

With a little bit of setup, Do.com can serve as a task management and communications broker between a remote writer and the rest of the project team.

Cohuman: Cloud-based Task Management With Some Nice Touches

With the cloud becoming more the project management platform of choice, the market for cloud-based project management tools is really heating up. Cohuman – now owned by MindJet, of MindJet MindManager fame—is in the same league as Asana  and Do.com  but touts more control over tasks and projects with their locking feature.  Cloud-based project management tools are great for freelancers and project teams because they are easy to learn and implement while owing no allegiance to any particular project management methodology.

Google Apps Marketplace for Technical Writers

My dual lives as a working technical writer on federal and commercial projects and writing for technology publications and websites doesn’t put me more at odds with things then with writing about Microsoft Office and Office productivity applications in general. I’ve long had my disagreements with Microsoft Office –especially from the implementation side – and have seen a growing part of my job helping to get teams working productively, developing and managing documents using this ubiquitous Office suite.

In job interviews, I try to frame this growing part of my job as making Microsoft Office work. On the other hand, I’ve been a technical reviewer for some Microsoft Office books (in a past life) and written a bit about Microsoft Office for some publications. The third party publishing industry doesn’t always have a boots on the ground mentality when their readers need it. While I am a bit late writing about it, the launch of the Google Apps Marketplace has the potential to be a real game changer for Office suites and not just Google Apps.

Some notable applications for technical writers include:

OffiSync: Another Google Docs/Microsoft Office Syncing Option

I’ve long been a proponent of a complementary model for Google Docs and Microsoft Office. While Google Cloud Connect is a great tool, I need to mention OffiSync — available in the Google Apps Marketplace — as another option for file syncing between the two office suites.

My Google Apps Experience: 5 Months Later

After years of following web office apps like Google Apps, I finally decided to  move willkelly.com, my professional site. to Google Apps for Business last September. A combination of drivers including my long simmering dissatisfaction with my ISP’s email (plus a long overdue need for IMAP) drove my need to make the change. Here is a status report…

Building the Better Google Apps Administrator

I’ve written about Google Apps and other web office suites for a while now and have even explored the intersection of Microsoft Office and Google Apps and its implications over technical writing and user productivity. While Google Apps can represent some significant cost savings for *some* organizations, it is not going to happen by just taking Google Apps live and sending your enterprise users a URL. Outside of a solid implementation plan, the role of the Google Apps Administrator plays a crucial role in the successful launch of Google Apps.

Google Apps Administrator Duties and Responsibilities
When considering the role of the Google Apps Administrator – remember the key role this person is going to play in the implementation and user adoption of Google Apps within your organization – I recommend taking a real holistic approach to filling this important job because the Google Apps Administrator could find themselves involved in a number of business critical functions including:

Is Microsoft Office in Danger?

WebOffice_Logo Having spent some of my professional life as a technical
writer and consultant and then writing for technology industry web sites and publications like WebWorkerDaily and Projects@Work, I’ve gotten the benefit of viewing Office productivity suites – Microsoft Office and web office suites
like Google Apps and Zoho Business from all sides.

Microsoft Office has indeed grown in complexity – Microsoft Office 2003, Microsoft Office 2007, and the upcoming Office 2010 all added more features that grow the venerable Office suite into more than just a tool to compose and save your documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.
